2021 Senate Election Mykhailo Martyniouk was nominated to the Canadian Senate in the 2021 Senate Election 2021 Senate Election with 237,228 votes
I was born in January 1977, in Western Ukraine to a hard-working Ukrainian Greek Catholic family. My family originates directly from the ancient Hutsul culture of the Carpathian region, which has only 21,400 members throughout the world. My family taught me the value of hard work and honesty and the importance of contributing to society by giving back to one’s community. In 2005 I married my wife Kate, and we are proud parents to our daughter Nicolette. We currently reside in Edmonton.
When I look back at my first day after immigrating to Alberta in 1994, I can proudly say it was the biggest and best investment of my life and has given me a greater return than I could have ever imagined. I have had various careers in my time in Alberta, and for the past eight years have owned and operated a logistics company, successfully serving the oil and gas sector. This has taken me all over the province from Fort McMurray to Cold Lake to Medicine Hat.
This great and hard-working province has provided me with so many opportunities from where I was able to shape my own, and my family’s lives. I have met so many wonderful Albertans and have gained an extensive understanding of other world cultures and their important contributions to our great province.
I successfully ran in the Alberta 2021 Senate Election in order to build an even better future for Alberta. I will always stand up for Alberta and be accountable to the people of this great and prosperous province.
As a Conservative Senate Nominee, I am proud to defend the common sense of Conservative principles that so many Albertans believe in and hope will be reflected in Ottawa. I define myself as a fiscally responsible conservative and a strong believer in reducing the government’s burden on growth and lowering taxes. I believe this is the best formula to create a strong economy.
Supporting Oil and Gas Industry
Alberta’s oil and gas industry is a significant sector of the Canadian economy. Alberta’s oil and gas industry is responsible for thousands of jobs in exploration, production, refining, and distribution. Albertan technologies and services are in demand worldwide. The oil and gas sector generates billions of dollars in revenues that help fund programs and services that support and improve the high quality of life of Albertans and all Canadians. As one of the largest producers of natural gas and the fourth-largest producer of oil in the world, Alberta has the opportunity to provide responsibly produced oil and natural gas to meet demand while driving job creation and economic growth in Canada. Our robust oil and natural gas industry create jobs, investment, and revenue that Canada desperately needs. Almost every region in Canada has benefitted from oil sands development through job creation and economic activity.
As a business owner operating in Alberta’s oil sector, Mykhailo understands how vital Alberta’s energy sector is to Alberta families, and to the Alberta and Canadian economies.
Environment – A Better Solution to Reduce Plastic Waste
In 2018 at a G7 meeting in Quebec, Canada, along with four other G7 countries and the European Union, signed a non-binding charter to reduce plastic waste. The countries agreed to work with industry and all levels of government to recycle and reuse at least 55 percent of plastic packaging and other plastic waste by 2030 and recover 100 percent of all plastics by 2040.
So far, European countries appear to be leaders in the waste-to-energy incineration of burning human-created garbage and then using the resulting heat to keep buildings warm and generate electricity for consumer consumption. With this innovative solution, the effect of the plastic pollution problem appears under control with an added economic benefit for the consumption of reusable energy in the effect in the European Union.
Canada, meanwhile, has a crisis when it comes to plastic recycling. Canada does not have an effective solution in place to achieve our commitment to reduce and recycle plastic waste. Approximately 86 percent of Canada’s plastic waste is landfilled, while only 14 percent is recycled. We are nowhere close to recycling 100 percent of the plastic in less than 20 years. Canadians who are looking for a better and more effective solution are concerned about quality and responsible waste management.
Most Canadian incinerators are decades old and are not competitive with the new effective standards of economic benefits. It is clear that Canada faces financial difficulties in innovating in clean energy and recycling waste by incinerating it to produce energy. This is generally twice the price of a landfill solution. But if energy is generated from waste and can be sold to a consumer, it could be mutually beneficial to the economic balance and a cleaner Canadian environment. It is important to understand the current Canadian commitment to reduce waste into affordable energy and commit to the fullest intent to create a leading step to a cleaner environment in mutual respect to the global plastic pandemic. Alberta companies in particular are leaders in creating new technologies and are well poised to play a leadership role in technology innovation in waste management solutions.
Promote Free Trade
In August 2017, the Canada-Ukraine Free Trade Agreement (CUFTA) came into force. In November 2018, Mykhailo founded the non-profit Association of the Canadian Ukrainian Free Trade Agreement. Its goal is to provide a solid business bridge between Ukrainian and Alberta companies to deepen trade linkages, business opportunities, and bilateral relationships between Ukraine and Alberta. It assists both countries’ business communities navigate CUFTA to achieve mutual prosperity.
Ukraine is a promising emerging market in exports as well as imports. The Association of Canadian Ukrainian Free Trade Agreement supports Ukrainian-Canadian businesses by deepening trade ties and further strengthening the bilateral relationship between the two countries. Mykhailo serves as President of the Association and has built a team that understands trade regulation and has business expertise, to assist members in taking advantage of the benefits of CUFTA.
